We survived the first week from winter break and Topic A and B of Module 4. For me, the first week back from a break always takes me a day or two to adjust to waking up to an alarm clock again. Next Monday is Martin Luther Day and school is out for students and teachers. There is also a small chance of snow on Tuesday, January 22 so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an extra long weekend and the chance to play in the snow.
This week we will start on Module 4, Topic C "Multiplication of a Whole Number by a Fraction." We have two quizzes scheduled for this week. Topic B, "Fractions as Division" quiz will be tomorrow (Monday) and Topic C quiz is currently scheduled for this Friday. We will also be incorporating more review and test prep into our Friday schedules.
Looking at last year's data from TnReady our students scored lowest on problems involving fraction operations. You can help your child now prepare for the test by reviewing these skills. We have covered adding and subtracting with fractions. Your child should be able to make equivalent fractions, simplify fractions, and convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Topic A quiz will come home in Wednesday folders this week. Remember, students who scored lower than a 70 can correct their quiz and receive partial credit up to a 75/C. This is a great opportunity for you to discuss misconceptions with your child and for your child to raise their grade.
We will finish lesson one from the "Learn from the Past" unit in science. Students may access science curriculum from their SCS Clever accounts. All students should know how to do this. Students will need to complete workbook page 92 in their Be a Scientist Notebook. This workbook pages consist of them researching an animal that has become extinct in the past 200 years. They will need to begin with constructing a question to research. The question can be a simple as, "What changes in the environment caused this species to go extinct?" Students will then need to research and answer that question in paragraph form.
